Welcome to My Kitchen: A Fun Experiment with Ice Cream Making

It's a beautiful day here in sunny California, and I'm excited to share a fun experiment with you all today. As I was flipping through my new book, "Super Good Baking for Kids," I came across an ice cream recipe that caught my attention. The best part? You don't need an ice cream machine to make it! Instead, we're going to use a little science trick to create our own ice cream at home.

The Science Behind Making Ice Cream without an Ice Cream Machine

So, how does this work? It's quite simple, really. We're going to use salt and ice together to lower the freezing temperature of the water. This will get our liquid extra cold, which is perfect for making ice cream. When we shake the mixture in a plastic bag, it's going to freeze inside the bag, turning into ice cream. It may sound a bit weird at first, but trust me, once you try it, it makes total sense.

Making Ice Cream with Any Flavor You Want

The best part about this recipe is that you can make it any flavor you want! Want chocolate ice cream? Add some cocoa powder! How about mango flavored ice cream? Get those flavorings from the store and add them in. The possibilities are endless, and I'm excited to share my own creation with you all today.

My Choice of Flavor: Blueberry Cake Donut Ice Cream

For this experiment, I've chosen to make a blueberry cake donut flavored ice cream. Blueberry cake donuts are my absolute favorite, and the best ones come from 7-Eleven. So, what did I do? I got a bunch of blueberry cake donuts from 7-Eleven, chopped them up, and let them sit out overnight to evaporate all the moisture. This will help to intensify the flavor of the donuts.

Preparing the Ingredients

Before we start making our ice cream, let's prepare the ingredients. We'll need half and half milk, sugar, salt, and vanilla extract. I'll mix these together in a bowl until the sugar dissolves. Next, I'll pour the mixture back into one of the containers. Now it's time to add the chopped donuts! This is where the magic happens – the flavor from the donuts will start to come out.

Assembling the Ice Cream Mixture

Now that we have our ingredients ready, let's assemble the ice cream mixture. I'll pour the sugar milk donut mixture into a plastic bag, making sure it's nice and tight. Next, I'll add half of the ice to the bag, followed by some ice cream salt. This is where the science comes in – the ice and salt will lower the freezing temperature of the water, creating an ideal environment for our ice cream to form.

Shaking the Mixture

Now it's time to shake the mixture! I'll gently move the bag around until the ice cream starts to freeze inside. This process may take a few minutes, but trust me, it's worth it. As you move the bag and it freezes at the same time, those tiny little ice crystals will start to form, giving our ice cream its smooth and creamy texture.

Finishing Touches

After about seven minutes of shaking, I'll remove the bag from the freezer for about 20 minutes to let it firm up a bit. This is where we can finally see the result – my blueberry cake donut ice cream! It's still a bit soft, but that's okay. We just need to break off some pieces and add them to our bowls.

Adding Toppings

Now that I have my bowl of ice cream, it's time to get creative with toppings! I'll start by adding some whipped cream that I've made earlier. Then, I'll sprinkle some blueberry cake donut holes on top – because what's ice cream without a little crunch? Finally, I'll add some fresh blueberries and raspberries for color and extra flavor.

The Result

And there you have it! My homemade blueberry cake donut ice cream, made with love and a little bit of science. It's still a bit soft, but that's okay – after all, ice cream is meant to be enjoyed at room temperature or slightly chilled. I hope you've enjoyed this experiment as much as I have, and I'd love to hear your own experiences with making ice cream without an ice cream machine!
