Here's Why the Saturn Car Company Didn't Deserve to Die

A Visit to the Vanquish: A Fun-Filled Experience Behind the Wheel of the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

As I pulled up to the Monterey Car Week event, I couldn't help but notice the impressive array of cars on display. But despite being surrounded by so many beautiful vehicles, my attention was immediately drawn to a sleek and powerful Aston Martin DBS Superleggera that caught my eye with its vanity plate "Too Hot". I couldn't resist the opportunity to take it for a spin and see what this car had to offer.

The DBS Superleggera is a beast of a car, with 290 horsepower on tap. But what really stood out to me was how well it handled, both in twisty roads and on the highway. The car feels wider and heavier than its Miata counterpart, which is no surprise given the added weight of its larger engine and more substantial body. And yet, despite its size, the DBS Superleggera is incredibly comfortable, with seats that feel luxurious and supportive.

One of the things that really impressed me about this car was how well it handled in tight corners. The DBS Superleggera has a limited slip differential and a 5-speed manual transmission, which make it a joy to drive on twisty roads. And while I did have to punch down my radio and adjust my shifting technique to avoid hitting the dimmer switch with my knee, the overall driving experience was incredibly enjoyable.

Of course, no car is perfect, and the DBS Superleggera has its downsides. One of the biggest drawbacks is its limited luggage space, which means that you'll have to put the top up if you want to haul more than a small amount of gear. And then there's the weird hump in the middle of the backseat, which doesn't seem to serve any practical purpose.

Despite these minor complaints, I had an absolute blast driving the DBS Superleggera. It's clear that this car was designed for fun, and it delivers on that promise in spades. And with a price tag that's significantly lower than its predecessor, the DBS Superleggera is definitely worth considering for anyone looking to add some excitement to their daily drive.

My Experience Testing Out the DBS Superleggera

As I got behind the wheel of the DBS Superleggera, I was excited to see how it would handle. And from the moment I started driving, I knew that this car was special. The acceleration is incredible, and the handling is smooth and responsive. It's clear that this car has been engineered to be fun, and it delivers on that promise.

One of the things that really stood out to me about the DBS Superleggera was its boost gauge. This little display tells you exactly how much boost pressure you're running at, which makes it easy to fine-tune your driving technique for maximum performance. And with a top speed of around 18 psi, this car is capable of truly incredible speeds.

But despite its impressive specs and handling, the DBS Superleggera is also surprisingly comfortable on the highway. It's clear that this car has been designed with comfort in mind, and it shows in its smooth ride and supportive seats.

My only real complaint about the DBS Superleggera was a bit of a quirk with the seals around the window vents. When I got the car washed, water just poured right into the cabin, which was a bit frustrating. But overall, this is a minor complaint, and one that doesn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the car.

A Brief History of the Saturn Brand

For those who may not be familiar, the Saturn brand was a relatively short-lived division of General Motors (GM). Founded in 1990, Saturn was designed to be a more affordable and innovative alternative to GM's traditional brands. But despite its ambitious goals, the Saturn brand ultimately failed to gain traction with consumers.

Over the years, Saturn produced a wide range of models, including the Vue SUV, the L-Series sedan, and the Ion compact car. However, despite its diversity of offerings, the Saturn brand was ultimately unable to compete with more established brands like Toyota and Honda.

In 2010, GM announced that it would be ceasing production of the Saturn brand, citing a lack of buyers and a inability to find a new direction for the division. The decision marked the end of an era for Saturn fans around the world, who will always remember the brand's innovative designs and performance capabilities.

But even though the Saturn brand is no longer with us, its legacy lives on in cars like the DBS Superleggera, which continues to deliver on the promise of fun, innovation, and performance that the brand was known for.

ground thumping horsepower woof-de-doo another rear-wheel drive hero is the Subaru BRZ but that's only 205 horsepower really now what if I told you that for less than 30 grand you could have bought a beautifully styled american-made small two-seater roadster with 290 horsepower a limited slip differential and tons of other cool stuff well you can't but you could have 10 years ago and that was this Saturn Sky redline but we were all too stupid back then to buy it you idiots you see Saturday is one of those many source subjects for me as I didn't think the company deserved to die during General Motors 2009 bankruptcy the whole idea for Saturn brand was brilliant as it was an innovative response to the Japanese invasion of import cars that began to dominate the economy car scene the Saturn company started with a sedan and a coupe with a space frame design that was rigid enough that other panels could be made of lightweight dent and corrosion resistant plastic I know but but it was still pretty good they actually sold really well and at least where I live Saturn's were everywhere and the SL and SC model wasn't too far behind Toyota Camry sales wise by the mid 1990s really impressive a decade later things weren't going as well mostly because General Motors started using captive imports and rebadging models from other brands rather than having Saturn do their own unique vehicles still Saturn tried to be different with things like a hybrid line with their ro sedan and view SUV both of which got over 30 miles per gallon highway a small SUV getting over 30 mpg you'd probably buy that too this was also a really well time back in 2007 when fuel prices were ridiculous so it seemed like the bran was pretty stable now that than this the new stuff really didn't do much for me but personally I always thought the early Saturn SC coops were fun to drive especially with a manual transmission but Saturn had never offered a real sports car before until this sky model introduced in 2006 and built in Delaware of all places it's similar to the Pontiac Solstice exactly like it just different body panels but more like the Opel GT export now the Saturn got the better into the looks department over the Pontiac in my opinion I really love the sharp lines of this car and since Saturn has been gone for so long most people don't remember what this car is I actually rented this car on Toro after my Ferrari exploded as you all know which was a major bummer now this was actually the cheapest manual transmission car available for rent on Toro in Los Angeles at $29 a day and despite the check engine light being on and having over a hundred thousand miles it served me perfectly on my 1,000 mile trip up to Monterey around San Jose to look at a really yummy car and then back here to Los Angeles to fly home it definitely went under the radar with all the crazy cars up in Monterey car week but the vanity plate didn't get a few Snickers now I don't know the story behind this plate but other than that I did really really enjoy the car too hot too hot it's it's too hot two of them a pair of them hot one big drawback with this thing is luggage space as I'm going to have to put the top up if I'm gonna haul all of my gear and it has this weird hump in the middle which doesn't make any sense I guess it's for the suspension but it's a really big hump I don't kind of have to wedge it in here come on Oh caught on that yeah and putting the top back ups also kind of a challenge she's got to clear these these humps here baby alright or something wedged oh oh that's my finger oh okay alright there we go got it down though yeah you got to put these down too definitely harder than a Miata complaining about luggage space on a little two-seater sports cars kind of silly and there are some other organ ama Kisch OU's with the tall guy like me when I'm shifting gears second to third I sometimes punch the radio off also putting the clutch in and out it's right where my kneecap can hit the dimmer switch so then I lose all my gauges at night kind of weird but this thing is so much fun it totally makes up for it boost now my intro I did say 290 horsepower which was stretching a little bit they actually started at 260 horsepower but there was a dealer installed option to up at another 30 horsepower to 290 which is pretty damn impressive you also get the limited slip differential and the 5-speed manual transmission now unlike the Miata this thing feels wider and heavier I'm sure it is heavier it's a more substantial car it's also a lot more comfortable even though it's pretty cramped in here and the seats they feel nice and it's just width wise it feels feels roomy I also have a boost gauge which tells me how much to boost tops out at about 18 I think psi this is a horrible place to test drive this car in gridlock in Southern California but it was great up in the twisty roads up in Northern California around Monterey had so much fun with this car it's great and it's not too bad on the highway either it does have a bad seal over here and when I got this car washed water just gushed right in but you know check engine light no real gripes this is a solid car it seems to be holding together really well it really is sad that this car and the Saturn brain in general didn't get to continue after not being able to find a buyer for Saturn GM decided to cease production and closed all of its dealerships so they can focus on their core brand like Chevy GMC Buick and Cadillac now some of the cars were rebadged like the view which became the chevy captiva i think and then there was the Saturn Aura sedan which was a gyro inspired Opel Insignia anyway it changed over to the Buick Regal sedan later the LaCrosse I think so those cars lived on but not the sky they quit making these in 2010 really sad short run now the good news about this is you can pick one of these up used really cheap nowadays on autotrader.com which link below is an article on autotrader.com slash oversteer with more about these cars now my trips over and I am ready to get out of all this traffic and crowds and everything else and get back to boring old Kansas but I'm
