The Art of Baked Beans: A Potluck Staple

I'm going to use the flavor from cooking this to cook all the rest of the ingredients for the beans all right now into the same pan I'm going to add some onions and two colors of bell pepper green and red and I just kind of diced them to a medium Dice and I'm also going to scoop up some sliced fresh jalapenos I'm going to stir these veggies around and cook them until they start to soften give me just about 3 minutes oh those veggies are looking fantastic okay now I am using canned pork and beans for this bean recipe I usually use canned pork and beans for any baked beans I make they already have a little bit of flavor to them they're a little bit Saucy and they always work so well.

The Secret to Great Baked Beans

then I have a few more things to add about a half a cup of your favorite barbecue sauce and then half a cup of brown sugar a couple of tablespoons of yellow mustard and a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar the magical thing about baked beans is just how low and slow they cook in the oven the sauce gets really thick and syrupy so it's fine to go ahead and add pork and beans or you can even add cans of baked beans because you're going to turn them into something way better than themselves okay so I'm just stirring until the sugar is dissolved and everything is mixed together honestly I could just grab a spoon and dive into this it looks and smells amazing but these are baked beans they're not stove top beans so this whole beautiful mixture goes into a baking dish.

ordinarily when I make baked beans it's for a barbecue with hot dogs and hamburgers and I would put bacon over the top and just serve these as a side dish but when I go to a potluck I like to turn it into more of a main course now lad's Aunt Janet she made this real meaty baked bean dish she used ground beef and that is delicious too but chizo gives it a little bit of a TexMex vibe that is so tasty so I sprinkled that cooked chizo over the top now I'm going to bake the beans at 325 degrees for two hours and then I'll take them out to rest so while that happens I thought it'd be fun to share some glimpses of recipes from potlucks Through The Years.

A Trip Down Potluck Memory Lane

me and potluck we go way back let's start this trip down potluck Memory Lane with dips like caramelized onion a lifelong favorite or a spin on my mom's seven layer dip I do eight layers maybe my kids will do nine and speaking of layers when it comes to sides a layered salad has real w Factor everyone loves a pasta salad it's make aead and portable and when I want to be a little fancy I make blueberry cornbread panzanella with croutons and a blueberry dressing so beautiful for our potluck at church I like to take a few dishes including a main dish like glazed pineapple ham to add to the spread another main course winner is meatballs boy oh boy does this look good and I got a great reaction from the kids when I took some to church along with a green bean casserole back in 2012 so Bryce what did you like that you got green beans you did good Mom I miss those little kids and I sure love a potluck I think the best thing about potlucks is that you just never know what everybody's going to bring and there's so much variety no two potlucks are ever alike all right the beans baked for two hours and then I took them out of the and let them rest for a bit they're still really hot but that rest time helps them get nice and thick so that's why they're so perfect for a potluck you can bake them and then cover them by the time you get there they're just perfect.

Dressing Up the Dish

now I would normally do this at the potluck and take these in little containers but I'm just going to show you now how I like to kind of dress up the top of the beans and with the chizo in the beans ktia cheese and cilantro are such a great garnish so you can just do little plastic zipper bags or you know little glass containers with lids and just do this right when you set it down on the potluck table okay now ordinarily at a potluck I have a plate about this big with 14 different piles of food and then I just spoon the baked beans over the top but since I'm not at of potluck I'm just going to show you the magic of of these beans okay I want you to look at how incredibly thick and Rich these are oh gosh oh man I love baked beans they're sort of underrated they're so tasty by the way I've always wondered this is it bad luck to eat your own dish at a potluck I'll have to look into that sure hope not
