DIY Halloween Cocktail & Licorice Spider Garnish - HGTV Handmade

Welcome to HGTV and Made with Me Maryann! We're all excited because Halloween is just around the corner, and what says Halloween like a creepy cocktail? Today, I'm going to show you how to make a delicious Black Widow cocktail. This cocktail has blackberries, a little bit of rum, and an adorably creepy garnish that will make your party guests scream with delight!

To start making our Black Widow cocktail, we'll need four bottles of blackberry soda, one cup of white rum, orange, 1/4 cup of simple syrup, black licorice ropes, a cup of orange juice, a cup of blackberries, and black salt. We want to make sure to keep a few of those blackberries aside for garnish because they're not only delicious but also add a lovely dark color to our Halloween cocktail. Now, let's add our simple syrup. Simple syrup is just a 1:1 ratio sugar to hot water that's then cooled down. Grab your wooden spoon and smash up those blackberries just a little bit – this is called muddling, and it really lets the fruit release a lot of its flavor and soften in the sugar syrup.

Now, we're going to add one cup of orange juice and one cup of white rum to our mixture. The rum totally optional if you want to make this a mocktail; it's equally delicious with no rum added, by the way! We'll also add four bottles of blackberry soda, which gives us a great fizz and really amps up that Blackberry flavor. Now, let's just give it a little stir – smells really good, our cocktail is done!

Now, it's time to make the garnish for our Black Widow cocktail. We're going to grab our licorice ropes because you can find this at old-fashioned candy shops or order it online if you like black licorice then you're really going to love this, but even if you don't like me still looks really cute! If you don't like black licorice, I assure you that the spider will still look adorable. We're going to turn this black licorice into a spider by cutting 2 to 3 inches of black licorice into four lengths, which is going to make the legs for our spider. You'll gather them up and just bundle them together like that and hold them in the middle.

Take the rest of your licorice rope and wrap it around once, then tie a knot – this black licorice is really easy to work with because it's very stretchy, and it holds knots really well. See there's our little spider guy all ready to hang from your cocktail straw! Grab your straw, which I'm using these festive gold paper straws, and just tie that spider towards one end. Go ahead and trim the excess; I think this is ready to go in a cocktail!

Before we pour our cocktail, let's give it a black salt rim. This is an optional step but I think it adds a real nice creepy factor to our drink. Dip a little bit of simple syrup into the black salt, then add some ice and wait for the right moment to pour in our cocktail. Float a few blackberries on top for garnish and cut a slice of orange for the rim – and last but not least, our little spider friend will be there with us! If someone served this to me at a party I would be seriously impressed, and it only took a few minutes to put together.

But now, I want to hear from you guys! How are you celebrating Halloween? Let me know in the comments below, and I'm going to start celebrating myself.
