ASUS Zenwatch First Look and Launch Rundown

I'm excited to be here at the Asus Premiere event, and I have to say, I'm a huge fan of cars, so it's amazing to see all these classic vehicles behind me. We're in a beautiful venue, but I'm not entirely sure what the building is called - we had to register first before we could get into the main area where everything was set up. As soon as I saw all the cars, I knew I had to do a quick rundown of my thoughts about the event so far. It's been pretty standard from Asus when it comes to their unveilings - they always have some flashy effects and high energy, which is great.

But the main event we were here for was the unveiling of the Asus Zen watch. Wearables are big this year, and everyone wants to see what companies like Asus are working on in terms of design and software enhancements for Android Wear. The Zen watch did not disappoint - it has a pretty nice body, and you can see some clips from it right now. The devices themselves were tethered, so I'm giving you a live look at the watch as we speak.

One thing that stood out to me about the Zen watch is the metal design around the actual watch face itself. It's not too big, and it looks like it contours to the wrist a bit - which is a nice touch. The glass is what really catches my eye here, though - it's got this 2.5D effect that gives it a curved look similar to traditional watches. And the metal itself has a brown color to it, which matches the Italian leather strap they showed us earlier.

I have to say, I'm impressed by how much thought Asus put into the design of the Zen watch - it really does feel like a high-quality timepiece, even though it's purely digital with Android Wear underneath. The connection to the Zen phones and other devices will probably give you some extra functionality, like the ability to tap on your phone to find it or use a remote shutter application. It's not revolutionary, but these kinds of enhancements are definitely nice to have.

As I look at the watch now, I can see that it still runs Android Wear - which is what you'd expect from an Asus device. You'll see all the usual cards and notifications, plus some extra features depending on the type of notification you're looking at. And if you look at the backing of the watch, you'll notice those pins on the bottom - I'm assuming that means it will be laying flat when charging, which is no problem. We also have a heart rate monitor on board, which is another focus area for Asus.

I mentioned earlier that we'd be doing an in-depth review of the Zen watch itself soon, but for now, I just wanted to give you all a live look at it. Like I said, it's definitely going to have some Android Wear demo on it, so we won't see too much about how it actually works - but I do want to put it on and show you guys what it feels like in more detail. We're currently here at the Asus Premiere event, which is being held in Berlin at epha. The show hasn't even started yet, but we've got all these events leading up to it, so stay tuned to Android Authority for all the latest news and updates from the event.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwe're seeing a lot of SmartWatches coming out with Android Wear on them which is no surprise but Asus just came out with one today and we actually think it looks pretty damn great hey it's Josh regar from Android authority what's going on everybody and this is your Asus Premier event rundown now before I even get into the launch of the actual devices we did have a few of them uh there were some laptops and also a new mimo pad which we'll take a look at pretty soon but the Zen watch is what we're looking at here but I did want to just uh put a couple words out there about the venue that we're in you can see all these classic cars behind me I am in heaven right now because we're seeing so many of these awesome everything from Mercedes to lootus to all of these beautiful Lamborghinis and everything inside of this wonderful venue I don't even know the name of the building we're in but once we got in here and we tried to get registered I just saw all the cars I knew I had to do the rundown out here but anyway let's go ahead and take a look at the actual event itself it was pretty much a standard Affair from Asus they always have some pretty flashy effects when it comes to uh their unveilings and whatnot and it's always really high energy which I thought was great uh but from there we also had even uh the zenat uh Premiere itself where after they announced a couple of laptops and a uh new Asus MeMO Pad 7 uh the watch itself was unveiled which was really what everyone was here for after all wearables are a big thing this year and we really looking to see what the different companies are going to be putting out in terms of the designs and the software enhancements on top of Android Weare and Asus definitely did that with their Zen watch so what we have here is a pretty nice body and you're going to see some clips right here the devices themselves were actually tethered so I'm giving you a live look at what we're looking at here with the Zen watch uh pretty much uh maybe in a couple days I'm going to try and give you a more Hands-On look a more in-depth look at the actual watch itself but for now take a look at these clips where we have a metal design around the actual watch face itself and the unit is actually not too big and it actually is a little bit thinner than some of the other ones that I've seen at least by my estimation uh it really does contour to the wrist a little bit and the glass I think is what I uh what I really like about this particular watch what we're seeing here is the term coined 2.5d glass which kind of Curves around it's a little bit more akin to the kind of watches you would see aside from the smart watches if you have if you're a big watch connoisseur you'll kind of see that bit of motif on the Zen watch here but after that the metal actually has a bit of a brown color to it to uh match what we saw which was the brown leather strap that they said was Italian leather which I think is pretty interesting but it actually looks really nice all around it actually really looks like what a watch would look like except it's not analog it is purely digital with Android wear underneath now the connection to the different Zen phones and the Zen uh or rather the mimo pad and whatnot uh that you can have between the watch and those particular devices will allow for a little bit more functionality you will probably have some extra functions the ones we saw was a taptap in order to find your phone and a remote Shutter application that was in there but it's really just uh those are really just enhancements on top of what is already basically an Android Weare device and you can see here the Android war is pretty much what you would expect it to be it still is uh it still looks about the same what you would expect uh with all of the different cards and notifications the ability to reply to messages and do a couple of extra things depending on the uh particular notifications that you have but all in all we do see some really great things coming from Asus we continue to at least and the Zen watch is no exception it also if you look at the backing of it it does have those pins on the bottom that will uh proba that probably means that it will be laying down on a particular charging dock which is perfectly fine but we also have a heart rate monitor on there because health is yet another Focus that Asus has when it comes to the Zen watch but anyway that's just a quick look at the Asus Zen watch and of course like I said I'm going to try to give you guys an in-depth look at the watch itself it'll probably have that Android Weare demo on it still so we're not going to see too much uh by way of its usage uh but nonetheless I do want to give you sort of a a better look at it by actually putting it on and whatnot but for now we have this live look once again we are here at the Asus Premiere event and we're here at epha in Berlin the show
