iOS 11.2.5: A Must-Update Despite Its Small Size
If you are curious about what's new with iOS 11.2.5, let's take a look at what all has changed since iOS 11.2.2. On the surface, this update may seem small in terms of size, but after going through the release notes, I was surprised to see how much has changed. One of the most significant changes is that iOS 11.2.5 will be the lowest firmware compatible with the new Apple HomePod, which will be releasing next month.
This means that if you're planning on getting a HomePod, you'll definitely need to update to iOS 11.2.5 in order to set it up. The HomePod will also automatically transfer your Apple ID, Apple Music, Siri, and Wi-Fi settings from your existing device, making the setup process much easier. The HomePod will be available for pre-order on Friday for $349, and shipping will start on February 9th.
In addition to the HomePod support, iOS 11.2.5 also brings a new change to Siri that allows you to hear news from Siri by simply saying "Siri, tell me the news." This feature starts automatically playing right there in Podcast, making it easy to stay up-to-date on current events. You can even specify which category of news you want to hear, such as sports or politics.
Another bug that has been patched in iOS 11.2.5 is the infamous "Chaos" bug, which would freeze your iPhone when receiving a link with a preview image. This bug was particularly annoying because it would cause both the sender and receiver's phones to freeze up. Thankfully, this bug has been fixed in iOS 11.2.5, so you won't have to worry about your friends freezing their phones anymore.
Some other smaller changes that have been patched in iOS 11.2.5 include a bug fix for an issue that caused the Phone app to display incomplete information in the call list and another issue that caused iMessage conversations to be listed out of order. These bugs were reported by users on Twitter, particularly around beta 2 and beta 3 phase.
In terms of security, iOS 11.2.5 adds additional protection against the notorious Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities. If you don't know what these are, watch my video on iOS 11.2.2 when that was released – it's an in-depth look at these vulnerabilities and how they affect your iPhone.
Interestingly, the security notes for iOS 11.2.5 show a significant reduction in kernel bugs compared to iOS 11.2.2. While this may not necessarily mean that an exploit is on the horizon, it's still reassuring to see that Apple has been working hard to patch up these vulnerabilities.
In terms of battery life, I can confirm that iOS 11.2.5 seems to last a little bit longer than iOS 11.2.2 on my iPhone 8 Plus. While it may not be a huge difference, the fact that I haven't noticed any random reboots or freezes is definitely a plus.
Finally, in terms of performance, iOS 11.2.5 runs pretty smoothly on my iPhone 8 Plus. I haven't had any issues with random reboots or freezes, and everything seems to be running as expected.
Overall, if you're not interested in jailbreaking your iPhone, then definitely go ahead and update to iOS 11.2.5. The additional protection against Spectre and Meltdown, the patched Chaos bug, and the improved battery life make this a must-update for anyone looking to stay secure and efficient on their iPhone.
