Mason Jars 3 Ways - Weekly Recap - HGTV Handmade

Decorating Mason Jars: A Creative Guide

Mason jars are one of the most versatile and affordable crafting supplies out there, making them an excellent choice for DIY projects. In this article, we'll explore three different ways to decorate mason jars, from a no-mess and quick solution to more intricate designs.

First Up: No-Mess Solution

One of the easiest ways to decorate a mason jar is by using it as-is and adding some decorative elements. For our first project, we're going to use the lid rather than the jar itself. Grab some patterned cardstock, trace around the lid, and then cut it out so it fits inside the jar nicely. You could just leave it like this, but I'm going to label the jar with some letter beads using a needle and embroidery thread. Place your beads in the center of the paper and mark on either side where you're going to sew. Thread your needle and poke it through the first mark, string on all your beads, and then pull the needle through to the other side. Tie a knot on the back side and trim your ends. Then, you're done! Place the lid into the jar, fill it up with whatever you've labeled it as, screw on the lid, and admire your beautiful work.

Second Project: Reusable Labels

For our second project, we're going to use chalkboard paint. However, it would be a little difficult to write with chalk over the raised letters on the front, so I'm only going to paint the back of the jar. Before you get started, make sure to use painters tape to mask off anywhere that you want to keep clean and be sure to also mask the top so that you don't get spray paint inside the jar. Once your jar is done and ready to paint, bring it outside and first spray it with a primer, then when that dries do two coats of chalkboard paint. Let that dry for a few hours and then remove all the tape. Finally, let the paint finish drying overnight before labeling your jar with whatever you'd like.

Third Project: Hand-Painted Mason Jars

For our final project, we're going to use chalkboard paint again but this time on the front of the jar rather than the back. Before you get started, make sure to mask off any areas that you want to keep clean and be sure to also mask the top so that you don't get spray paint inside the jar. Once your jar is done and ready to paint, bring it outside and first spray it with a primer, then when that dries do two coats of chalkboard paint. Let that dry for a few hours and then remove all the tape. Finally, let the paint finish drying overnight before labeling your jar with whatever you'd like.

Conclusion

Decorating mason jars is a fun and creative way to add some personality to your home decor or as gifts for friends and family. With these three different methods, you can create unique and beautiful pieces that will stand out from the crowd. Whether you're looking for a quick and easy solution or more intricate designs, there's something on this list for everyone.

On April Fool's Day, Maryann shared some hilarious clips from the crafternoon blooper reel, including a moment when Cath started twerking. It was definitely a laugh-out-loud moment!

Later in the week, Julia showed us an easy way to make homemade rings using just a few simple materials and some basic crafting skills.

On Thursday, we brought out the power tools for our throwback Thursday project, where we learned how to make an apron holder out of old door knobs. It's amazing how something as simple as this can add a touch of elegance to your kitchen decor.

Finally, on Friday, Andrea shared a clever way to reuse old dinosaur toys to make cute little planters that are perfect for your patio or next to your windows. They're a great way to give new life to old favorites and add some personality to your outdoor space.
