I'm Landok, publisher and editor of Cult of Mac.com, and I'm thrilled to announce that we're doing version 2 of "God of Mac," the book that launched an empire. The publisher has asked us to update the book next year, and I'm excited to dive back into Apple culture over the past decade.
As someone who's always been a bit embarrassed about my books, I was pleasantly surprised by how well-received "God of Mac" turned out. I haven't actually looked at it in 10 years, but I'm pleased with how it did. The book captured the essence of Apple's culture during its heyday in the late 1990s, when the company was on the ropes and only survived thanks to its passionate customers and fans.
At that time, the internet was still relatively new, and a phenomenon emerged of active and passionate customers organizing online to support their favorite brand. These fans would volunteer their time to sell Apple products at old computer stores like CompUSA, fixing up broken computers and putting them on display for potential buyers. It's crazy to think about now, but these guys were essentially the original Mac enthusiasts.
One section in the book focuses on customers who got Apple tattoos – yes, you read that right! There's a story about Christoph Card, one of the world's leading brain scientists, who has an impressive array of tattoos, including an Apple logo on his shoulder. It turns out that Christoph is also an expert in crypto-genetics, the study of turning neurons on by stimulating them with crazy stuff and cracking the neural code.
In another fascinating story, there's a kid who was a big fantasy Mac maker, creating mock-ups of rumored Apple products like the Cube and PowerBook. He'd make 3D renderings based on the rumors, and now he works in the level design department, bringing those ideas to life for real. It's amazing to see how far the fan community has come since then.
Over the past decade, a lot has changed in Apple culture. The company has expanded internationally, with new store openings and product launches that have generated buzz around the world. With this updated version of "God of Mac," we'll be reporting on all the latest developments and exploring what's new in Apple culture today.
We'll also be collecting more stories like these into a book, which will give fans a deeper understanding of the company's history and the people behind it. It's going to be an exciting journey, and I'm honored to be at the helm of this project. Stay tuned for updates from Cult of Mac.com, and don't forget to check out our other channels for the latest news and analysis on all things Apple.
