**The Significance of Changing One's Perspective**
It may seem insignificant, but if everyone started to kind of change their point of view that would lead to something pretty crazy. This dance has been pretty eye-opening great thankful. I'm a little kitty cat; I don't like water.
Let me say your cars disorganized and your life is disorganized so I take care of this saucer what everything it's only a week. I'm in the privileged position to know that I have a light at the end of the tunnel but I really know I'm not gonna bust my sleeping bag out even that's probably the right move just gonna put my jacket over me so it doesn't look like I'm sleeping in my car.
I mean I look like I'm sleeping in my car, that won't look like I'm living out of my car which is key one of their survival skills is to make themselves invisible yeah so to avoid this intense stigma the one pretty cool initiative is called safe parking Los Angeles and this is intended to give homeless individuals who are sleeping in their cars 12 hours of safe secure parking including restrooms and a security guard.
I think right now there's there's only one alright let's get the sleep family I don't know why I said that see in the morning 5:43 I did not sleep at all. I guess I'm gonna head to the office cuz I have nothing else to do my mind is just like I feel static in my head no one last night dude are you excited for it no I'm not last night was the last night yeah that was one business week I'm good.
You know when I had a dream last night I don't know what is about policy. I was walking around past the shop I see a dog on fire he runs into the shop I know when the dog knows but something tells me that I am that dog I feel like I'm on fire you know it's like Zach you're the office at 5:30 I act we start at 10:00.
It's a week later since I've slept in my car, my beard's gone and at this point in the video, I feel like all I've done is complain so I meant interview my friend Natalie. She lived in her car with her mom for ten months. I think she's gonna have a lot more insight into living in your car than I would in one week.
**An Interview with Natalie**
So let's talk to what were the big adjustments that you haven't made and you really can't? You're on all the time, and you're in survival mode all the time. I'm still striving we're still up every day going to work and do what we got to do there's no excuse.
Waking up going to work what was the mental transition like from going from survival mode to work mode and trying not to let the two overlap? To be honest, I think I don't think there was ever really a switch so I just made it an extra job you know to me when when you're low I feel like the best thing you can ever do is it's flip it.
And it's not easy it's real mental you really got to sit with yourself and know what kind of person you are. I think once you figure out who you are as a individual you fight for that even whenever it's tough you don't give up.
You know if you want to help out the less fortunate there's a lot of easy ways to do so first is to find a local homeless resource in your area and donate some clothes. You can also volunteer.
I'm gonna be helping out with the 2019 homeless count in January, and if you want to join me I'll leave a link in the description where you can sign up. I'll be helping out with the West LA count big big thank you to Jeff and Erin and my friends place also big thank you to Natalie.
All of them took time out of their schedules to really help me get a perspective on this issue, and it's really opened my eyes so thank you guys a lot.
WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enfine do you want to feel like an idiot not yet this is honestly one of the weirdest experiences of my life Oh an hour to work an hour to drive home I've heard plenty of people say that they practically live in their cars but for a lot of people in LA calling their car home is a reality I wanted to see if I could spend one business week living out of my car I think either I or James jokingly suggested that what up you know I slept in my car for a job like hey I'd make a great episode wheelhouse that we laughed and now I'm not so sure tired already and I'm stuck with my car yet tonight you start your 5-day run sleeping what do you think some challenges are gonna be well the biggest challenge is gonna be the fact that you're sleeping in logistically it's really hard you have to go to the gym to shower you're not allowed to shower at our house you're not allowed or any of our houses you're not allowed to go to your girlfriend's house my biggest concern use your safety I don't want you to get murdered yeah I don't want to get murdered either Katie do you have any concerns pretty concerned that you're gonna stink up our workspace and we work about one foot away from one another definitely concerned for my nostril steak so he's doing this because 10,000 people in LA more across the country live in their cars and not as an experiment some of them have jealous yeah and they have to maintain a normal life without letting on that they no one runs into a wall become those sweet people I resolved to not be a cranky boy but no promises honestly the more I think about it this the harder it's gonna be you're such a creature of habit like you sit down you know cookies and milk every day alright this is Alex he edits every episode of wheelhouse I'm gonna be sleeping my car this week how do you think that's gonna go for me have you ever spoken your car finals week days before uploading wheelhouse and I think we related to the house I'm in my do I need any pro tips hatchback folding out our seats B that's why I got a speed three okay hi my C stoop my seats actually do fold down in the back I think that's gonna come into play Eddie is my roommate who work with Nolan we need to hang out all the time yeah always together yeah what do you think are gonna be some challenges with sleeping in my car this week getting her ass getting cold okay yeah it is kind of rushed packing last night and I definitely under packed let me the keys or something Donald let me know check and create the MC Steakhouse yes yes all right so it is about 9:30 now I think everyone's cleared out of the office I'm actually getting pretty tired so I think I'm going to be able to fall asleep tonight got my jacket on that's kind of all I've got in terms of warmth for the night so let's go get my car my card it's just in there in between the gate and the Gucci flip-flop so let's lock her up that's not he's that one eternity later I'm safe and sound behind this gate home sweet home I am gonna sleep in this car now I have to wake out before Philippe gets here otherwise he's gonna know I'm sleeping at the office so I'm gonna set my alarm for 7:30 all right night first man asleep not great if I'm being honest you know what I'm gonna sit down in our couch room for a little bit shivering I actually don't feel that bad I feel pretty good so sleepy yeah I'm not terrible no yeah do I feel like an idiot not yet likely I'll get there right now on day two I do need to take a shower wait Nolan where you gonna do good luck good luck knowing like I don't want this to be a funny video right because it's not really a funny topic like a little details that I have to work out are funny someone living in their car it's not funny no no I think I need to I need to talk to somebody I need to talk to late someone who actually helps you more yes and see what can be done otherwise this is kind of pointless after sleeping in my car I came here to my friend's place in Hollywood it's a youth drop-in center for young people experiencing homelessness so even though my friend's place does start of 12 to 18 year olds our biggest demographic in terms of age is 18 to 24 years old and within that age group we have young people who have been homeless for as long as seven years how many what what how big is the homeless population in away the last count was 53,000 according to the same count about 15,000 which is 25% of the entire homeless population are living in their cars their ideas for upheavals that's a situation that's hard to get out for real live in your car but also maintain a job maintain some sort of way of life and keep your sanity we know young people who have full time really good employment and are still searching on the streets not because they want to be but they can't afford a place so now they're just chasing after you know cheap rents like millions of others in Los Angeles and so it's not as easy as just getting a job you're absolutely right and I think you know I think how one escapes homelessness is as individualized as how someone enters it okay I mean I certainly have taken for granted the ability to like leave work and go somewhere where I can be comfortable earlier today I was saying I could do this I don't think I could I mean if I was in that position what a choice would I have left for sure try to get a bigger car I am heading to a park on you know West LA I like this this is good right here this is honestly one of the weirdest experiences of my life honestly I feel like I'm kind of proving on people's community here it I have to rearrange my car I need to make a lot more room what's house stuff from a truck I should have taken care of that honestly I'm not the most prepared guy so I apologize for that why do I do these things I think I can do it a few moments later oh my god this is why for the dumbest thing how did I think this was gonna work I thought this is gonna work this is gonna be a long week update I've kind of found a position that works it's really not comfortable all right I'm gonna try to sleep I'll update you if I can oh my god look how big I am in this car this look like an ogre in the backseat of this car actually don't think I smell bad although I still want to take a sugar gotta say after that workout I feel way better than I did when I woke up this morning I'm willing to bet that when five o'clock I'm thinking that if I still had my Honda Passport this challenge would be a lot easier because I've actually I slept in that thing for back in the day when I had my passport I had definitely spent a few nights in the back yeah we were partying a few yeah a little too hard fine Mustangs not the case not yesterday but today I did dude what's with old guys and this hanging out butt naked in the locker room you know Karen you're older I guess we're a guy and then he dropped one of the hair dryers so he would be on everything out as a hair dryer like dried his just forcing everyone to gaze upon his I wish I was sleeping in this tonight nice comfy as hell well I said the rain wasn't coming down I was wrong about that neck pillow my sleeping bag this is as good as it's gonna get oh I'm supposed to wake me up that jambalaya had yesterday for lunch is creeping up on me I can feel it's an unnecessary detail the gym is too far I had to stop use the restroom and you know so you're waiting on other people some other guy was in there that's it mate I don't have to wait for this on the house I can must go a lot of your life becomes dependent on other people like you there's a certain things that you want to have your own of so you can do whatever you want to do when you want to and the restroom is definitely not one of those things that you want to give away will earn it it's very important you know this could be you this could be one paycheck makes the difference between you and that person that's on the street or that person that's receiving services somewhere and it seems insignificant but if everyone started to kind of change their point of view that would lead to something pretty crazy this dance has been pretty eye-opening great thankful I'm a little kitty cat I don't like water let me say your cars disorganized and your life is disorganized so I take care of this saucer what everything it's only a week I'm in the
