2024 Honda Prologue - Powering Ahead in Electric Mobility

The Prologue: Honda's First All-Electric SUV

Honda has turned to General Motors (GM) for help with its first ever all-electric SUV, and the result is a great looking machine that despite its solid underpinnings from another automaker absolutely looks and feels like a Honda product. The Prologue is not just a Honda design, but a testament to the company's commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The Prologue is based on GM's Ultium platform, but it has been optimized by Honda engineers. In fact, Honda sent a team of its own people to embed themselves alongside GM as Optimum development moved along. The goal was to make the Prologue look, feel, and drive like a Honda product, which they have certainly achieved.

The design side of the Prologue is solely responsible for Honda, and it's clear that they've put their heart and soul into creating a clean and simple design aesthetic. They call this design "Neo rugged," which means low, wide, and sleek – an unexpected combination in an SUV, but one that pulls off beautifully. The wheelbase of the Prologue is 20 inches long, pushed way out to the corners, providing a great looking stance while also allowing for tons of room on the inside.

The interior volume of the Prologue is impressive, with dimensions similar to those of the Honda Passport but with the interior space of an Odyssey. The cabin itself mirrors the same clean and simple design aesthetic from the exterior, with a focus on functionality and comfort. Ahead of the driver is an 11-inch digital display, with an 11.3-inch display in the center that handles wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Duty.

In addition to these screens, you can also run Google Maps via the Google-built-in system, which is smart enough to display necessary charging times and can also tell the car to pre-condition the battery if you're heading to a DC fast charger. The Prologue comes standard with interior tech and display screens across all models, but the Elite trim adds a sport driving mode and a head-up display.

When it comes to power, the Prologue is offered as a single motor front-wheel drive machine or with a dual motor all-wheel drive setup. All-wheel drive is available on both the EX and Touring models, but it's standard on the top spec Elite. The dual motor setup produces an estimated 288 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque, while Honda aims to achieve an EPA-estimated 300 mile driving range on the front-wheel drive version.

The Prologue uses an 85 kilowatt hour battery pack that can handle charging speeds up to 155 kilowatts. This means it can deliver 65 miles of range in around 10 minutes, making it an attractive option for those looking for a fast and efficient electric vehicle. The EX model will come with 19-inch wheels, while the Elite model gets a set of 21s.

In terms of pricing, Honda hasn't announced official prices just yet, but says the Prologue will start in the upper $40,000 range before any taxes or incentives that might be available. The Prologue is scheduled to arrive early on in 2024 and will be followed by a larger EV in 2025, which will be solely a Honda-developed machine riding on their e-architecture platform.

The transition of Honda's Bev production to its original Marysville Ohio plant is a significant milestone for the company. As they move forward with electric vehicle manufacturing, it's clear that the Prologue is just the beginning – a precursor to a new era in sustainable and innovative transportation solutions.
