Sony X95J TV _ Best Picture Settings

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enso you bought yourself a sony x95j or for whatever reason you're just wondering what the best picture settings for this tv might be let's dig into that hey everyone i'm caleb denison and today we're going to take a look at my favorite picture settings for the sony x95j now you notice i said my favorite not necessarily the best and that's because i think the best picture settings for this tv are really going to depend on your preferences and also the situation that the tv is in so keep that in mind as we go through and i do have some good news here sony's picture presets are so good out of the box that there's really not a whole lot of adjustments you need to make but those adjustments they're buried kind of deep so let's get into that right now all right so we're going to start from the google tv home screen and the easiest way to get to picture settings is to press the settings button on the remote control which will pop up this menu here by default the tv will be in standard mode which is fine for a lot of folks it's got a cooler color temperature that a lot of folks prefer and a little bit of motion smoothing but again this is all about what i prefer and what i think looks best so we'll go into picture settings and we'll get out of standard the next option is cinema and i think this is going to work great for most folks you could just stop here and you'd be fine but i would turn off the light sensor if you don't want it automatically changing the brightness curve based on how bright your room is the other way to go is the way i'm gonna go and that's to go all the way over to the custom mode okay from there i do want to make a couple of adjustments the first thing i'm going to do is turn the light sensor off and that's just because i want control of the brightness when it's on it senses the ambient brightness in your room and brightens the tv up to compete with sunshine or ambient brightness and then darkens it down a lot of people like this but i turn it off because again i'm a control freak and that's just how i roll then we're gonna go down to the brightness setting it's really important that we look at this because there's some control of how bright the tv is going to be and it's not actually from the brightness setting itself scroll down past all this stuff to get to the auto local dimming and peak luminance settings now by default peak luminance is actually set to off this has the most dramatic effect on how bright your tv is specifically in sdr content so sdr content on netflix or youtube or your cable box what have you peak luminance determines how bright it's going to actually be on the average now if you love a really bright tv peak luminance set to high is going to make you very happy i think most folks should go with medium this means that the tv is going to be brighter than the sdr spec which is going to suit most people's environments you could bump it down to low if you watch in a dark room but definitely play around with the peak luminance setting to get what looks best to you that's the most important thing auto local dimming should probably stay on medium for most people all right but these are the two things under brightness that you would actually want to play around with to taste get it to where you like it the next thing to look at is under the motion section by default this is going to be set to custom and it introduces a modicum of motion smoothing or soap opera effect i always turn this off again go with your personal preference but this is all about what i prefer right so we're going to go with off on that cinemotion set to high is just fine and everything else can be left alone so we did that from the home screen let's see what kind of impact that had when we go into an sdr program on youtube for instance well i can already tell you by going into the youtube app my settings did not take so we're going to switch to custom and then go take a look at all the adjustments i've made and it looks like they stuck the light sensor is off auto local dimming is medium oh but peak luminance got turned off so i'm going to bump that back up to medium double check motion looks like that's a custom so it didn't carry over some of my more important settings and i just adjusted those to my preference now that we've made an adjustment in youtube let's check out sdr on netflix we'll go into picture settings it looks like i'm still in that custom picture mode which is great uh the light sensor is off the brightness is at the right settings auto local dimming is medium and peak luminance is also medium and motion is set to off with cinemation high all right so once you make the correct settings in an app it looks like it'll carry over to the other apps for sdr now it's time to get into hdr so i've pulled up an hdr video on youtube and we just need to get into picture settings again uh you can see up in the upper right hand corner we are indeed in hdr we're in our custom picture mode which is great but we haven't touched hdr uh so far everything's been sdr so we definitely want to double check everything the light sensor is off that's good to see that that's carried over under brightness we're going to see that hdr tone mapping is set to gradation preferred and that's definitely what i prefer but if you want the brightest possible hdr you can choose brightness preferred under hdr tone mapping moving down a little bit lower we see that auto local dimming is set to medium peak luminance is set to high and really if you want the best hdr experience you should leave the peak luminance set to high it has a different effect in hdr than it does with sdr last thing i want to check is the motion and it looks like motion flow is still off so not much to adjust when it comes to just hdr make sure you're in the custom mode most of your important settings are carried over now let's check out dolby vision so i've pulled up a dolby vision title on netflix and pressed pause and we'll once again go into picture settings now by default uh it's going to choose dolby vision bright we also have the option for dolby vision dark and then there's your usual vivid mode dolby vision bright is what i think most folks are going to want again if you're in a dark room and you don't need super super punchy average picture level you can go with dolby vision dark dolby vision bright though is what i found most people enjoy and it's what i enjoy now further down there you're gonna see that we have an option for netflix calibrated mode this is supposed to be the best representation of netflix according to netflix and the creators at netflix i will let you try this out and decide for yourself but i have never found it to be particularly useful moving down light sensor is turned off which is great to see let's double check our brightness stuff we are at medium local dimming and high peak luminance exactly what i expected and under motion just double checking that motion flow oop it's on custom so we don't have motion flow defeated entirely in dolby vision bright i would suggest turning that off but again it's entirely up to you so that should set us up well for apps we've got everything that we want for sdr hdr and dolby vision set up for all of our apps doesn't matter whether we choose netflix or hbo max or disney plus or youtube we should be getting the best possible picture quality now let's check our hdmi inputs so i've got a uhd blu-ray in hdr paused here i pull up settings and it looks like we're in standard mode so in a perfect world i'd like to see that it would intuit i want the same settings that i used for the apps copied over here for hdmi inputs that's simply not the case so i'm going to have to go and do the work that i did before over here for the hdmi inputs that counts for sdr dolby vision and hdr i'm not going to drag you through all the settings uh you just need to make the settings the same as i made them before the important thing here is that you have to do it again for your hdmi inputs now i've pulled up the xbox series x as opposed to the playstation 5 for reasons i'll get into in a moment uh now if i pull up the picture settings you'll see we're in standard picture mode even though i've already told the tv this is a game console but before i come down too hard on this sony tv let's actually launch a game and see what happens okay i've loaded up forza horizon 5 here because it's the new hotness and also i'm a little bit uh tired of forza horizon 4. also the hdr on this looks pretty fantastic press the settings button and i did turn on auto picture mode earlier but we're still in standard and that's because there is no auto game mode per se on sony tvs uh and therefore we're going to need to make some specific adjustments for our game console the smart move is to go into game mode and one of the things i like about sony's game mode is that it takes a picture quality centric sort of approach so we do have a warmer color temperature the motion settings are where we want them there's a few other things to consider the light sensor among them like i talked about earlier with these most of these are going to be perfectly great settings i'm not going to want to make a bunch of adjustments to the picture settings for the game mode it's going to look great however if we want the best performance out of the xbox series x there is one hidden little setting that we need to get into what we want to do is pull up general settings go into channels and inputs scroll down to external inputs and then finally hdmi signal format we'll go down to hdmi 4 which is what we've chosen for our xbox series x again could have been the playstation 5. and you'll see we have some options here we can either be in an enhanced format which supports dolby vision or we can be an enhanced format which supports 4k and 120 hertz so here's the real choice here we can either have dolby vision or we can have 4k 120 you cannot have both and i'll show you exactly what i mean we'll leave this on enhanced format dolby vision and then go back to the xbox from the home screen we'll go into the xbox settings we'll choose tv and display options and 4k tv details and this right here is why we have the xbox connected and not the playstation 5. this particular readout which shows us that we've got all green check marks except for 4k at 120 hertz dolby vision gaming is however enabled and maybe that's what your priority is however if 4k 120 is more important to you that's where we need to go into the setting i just showed you where we go to channels and inputs external inputs once again we go to hdmi signal format and for hdmi 4 we can choose enhanced format if i do that and back out we should see yes indeed we have enabled 4k and 120 hertz but dolby vision gaming has been disabled so that's the real lesson here the sony game mode is excellent you barely need to touch it but you are going to need to make a choice between 4k 120 or dolby vision personally i'm going to select dolby vision because i really want the best possible graphics experience now before we finish off this gaming section let's go down to calibrate hdr for games i've already verified that we're in hdr mode for the tv this is where you're going to optimize your hdr performance and you can't really see this because of the exposure of the camera but we basically want to follow the instructions to make sure that we're getting the most out of the hdr experience getting the brightest highlights before it starts to clip and that should give us the best possible hdr gaming experience as it happens i have to make very few adjustments here and we're good to go so there you go those are my favorite picture settings for the sony x95 jade like i said before those picture presets are pretty great right out of the box but if you dig a little bit deeper you can really bring the best performance out of this tv and i hope that you enjoy it at home thanks as always for watching everyone if you found this video helpful please consider clicking that like button and subscribe as well we've got tons of great content here at digital trends and while you're here here's two other videos that i think you'll likeso you bought yourself a sony x95j or for whatever reason you're
