**The Age-Old Question: When to Upgrade Your Phone**

As time goes on, hardware inside your phone like storage and RAM start to eventually degrade and cause your phone to be just a little bit slower. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about that side of things. Another reason potentially because of software on your phone I think we all tend to love new software updates and brings new features but also we got to remember that these features tend to be more taxing on the phone that you have and when that phone was first designed it was designed with those current features from that year in mind as the phone gets new software updates and new things added to it it might start to run a bit slower even a bit warmer and obviously can be a frustrating experience.

**The Impact of Software Updates**

It's another huge reason people want to upgrade their phones and it's kind of easy to see an ad on TV or somebody making a YouTube video and think I need that. Luckily, many manufacturers like Apple, Google, and Samsung have given the pledge to users that their phones will get new features and software updates for many years to come. Um so hopefully that means the urge to upgrade can be mitigated if that was your big reason if software features were the big reason you wanted to upgrade. Unfortunately, far as the companies will bring software updates does not mean you're going get all the new features and that's kind of been in the news recently with iOS 18 where specifically Apple intelligence so Apple got on stage and touted all these great new AI features but turns out these are only coming to the latest iPhone 15 Pro phones and later not even like the current generation iPhone 15 and 15 plus are going to get them now. Apple's got all their reasons as to why that is and again I'm not going to talk about whether that's like the right decision but the point is even if you get delayed a software version does not mean all the new features will come with it it's kind of a bummer.

**When Do You Need Those New Features?**

So when do you actually need those new features. Well, it comes down to which features you're looking for. If it's speed then depending on your phone it might not be sort of as big a difference as you would expect so for example iPhone 15 Pro with the A7 chip inside it's only 10% faster than the 14 with the a16 inside yeah that's faster on paper but it's very hard to notice the difference in day-to-day use and again that's still a very personal decision. But like what about other features of phones. I think that comes down again to to preference one example I can give with the iPhone and the ultra wide angle camera so I've been pretty big advocate of telephoto camera I've got kids who play sports I love to run around use a telephoto to kind of zoom in and get as much useful photos as I can so when Apple brought the ultra wide camera I wasn't as excited for that on a new phone so I didn't think it feature I would use that much and if I didn't R tech for a living it was hard to say I would upgrade.

**Do You Need Those New Features?**

But like with all of that should you upgrade your phone. I think the best way to know when's the right time it's kind of when multiple issues arise if your battery life sucks your phone is slow you don't have the latest features it's probably a good sign that it's time to upgrade and for my iPhone users if your iPhone has a home button it's time to upgrade uh but like I mentioned earlier if you're just having like One Singular issue I think it's important to check and see if it can be fixed or if you really need to spend the money on a new phone. But the most important thing to remember is that as long as you aware of what goes into your phone then you could make an informed decision about what's right for you when you want to spend your money and upgrade I think that's what's important I don't don't want people to fall in the Trap that we've all succumbed to and spend more money on a new phone when you don't need to and something I'm going to try to remember and try to remind friends and family who always ask me what phone should I get.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthank you DG for sponsoring a portion of this video every year I feel like marketing like pulls me apart it's like a struggle between my rational and my emotional side to upgrade a phone and like these companies do an incredible job like at the marketing their phones are getting more expensive they want us to spend 7800 $1,500 on a spec out phone and like chances are the phone that you're upgrading from is still probably fine so trying to deprogram myself a little bit separate from that marketing and actually look kind of quasi scientifically about when you should actually upgrade your phone taking all the motion out of the equation first thing that you generally hear someone or maybe it's you complain about their phone that think about upgrading it's usually like battery like that's usually the giant thing that people want to change or want upgrade here things like this thing only lasts me half a day I got to charge it all the time it gets super warm and the thought process is like May if I get a new phone it will fix that and I hear these things all the time and it happens to me especially with my iPhone 14 pro Max kind of jumps out uh that thing was not good in the battery life Department I had crazy battery degreg that was Quantified I was below 70% of battery health after like 8 to 10 months it wasn't like a good phone experience and that kind of forced me to want to upgrade so I went back and looked at some of Apple for example their support documents how should these batteries age so for those 14 models Apple says that they should keep 80% of battery health at 500 cycles and the 15 model should retain about 80% at 1,000 Cycles so batteries are getting better but if you are having battery issues before you run to go upgrade a new phone check your battery health if it's nearing 80% or below you might think buy a new phone it's kind of about what they want you to do you ever stop to think about why upgrading your phone brings back that great day when battery life it's no shock here it's it's brand new what if you could just fix the battery right like what if you could keep the rest of your phone you can and I think it's something a lot of people think about uh but you can change out your old battery in your phone and bring it back to that all day battery life that day one battery life that we're used to this is probably the most coste effective way to keep your phone lasting longer without needing to upgrade and obviously if you have an iPhone you can do this through apple with Apple Care they replace it for you directly but the cost is going to vary on the phone but certainly it's less than buying an all new phone another big area to people talking about all the time with their phones is speed phone feels slow it's sluggish it's not as fast as it used to be apps take forever to load it takes forever to boot up all those reasons but there can be a lot of like actual reasons why that's happening first it's actually directly related to battery which I just talked about but this is where we get kind of like tin foil Hatty we've all heard the conspiracy theory that compan is like apple purposely slow down your phone so you're forced to buy a new one turns out that was not much of a conspiracy at all Apple actually does or depending on who you want to believe did this and according to them they were doing you a favor they want to prioritize battery life over performance so as the phone gets older and battery life gets worse Apple will Throttle Down your phone to make it slower and this case means you'll get better battery life so Apple in their infinite wisdom will say will throttle your performance so your phone will be slower but your battery is going to be better you probably want to go upgrade your phone it all comes back into the circle to battery solving a lot of these problems here and just like when it's hard to decide when to upgrade your phone and you might find yourself looking for a new computer let me introduce you to this video sponsor the LG Grand Pro on the screen you have an OLED display at 120 HZ refresh rate you've got an extremely thin design at only 12.8 mm and this thing weighs under 1,200 G it feels like one of those display computers at Ikea where there's no like actual battery in it it's got a dual fan cooling system it's got speakers with Dolby ATM Mo and smart am there's Windows hello builtin LG security guard you get improved mobile connectivity with Intel Unison and LG gram link it's also got LG glance by mirror metrics for security and privacy enhancements with AI powered gaze detection packing Intel's core Ultra processor uh with Intel AI boost that can handle a ton of AI workloads even without a network connection so nothing in the clouds obviously AI is like the centerpiece of a lot of Dev devices nowadays laptops kind of are the Hallmark of that but one like incredibly useful use case they made searching for image utilizing AI incredibly simple you want pictures of a dog you see pictures you've taken of a location and it's going to use AI to give you really detailed results also to make sure that your batter is going to last or smart battery Performance Management with AI as well if you're looking to do direct file sharing photo transfers or screen mirroring between your LG gram and an iOS or Android device LG actually has you covered with the LG Ram link app it is everything that you want an incredibly thin and light package and also LG's got some great deals going on for Prime day that you're probably not going to want to miss if you want to learn more about what LG is doing with the grand Pro or check out any of the other products that LG has allation you need will be down below you good side with apple and say what they did was right I think people should be able to make L decisions they want with their phone and use it however they want to use it but if you have an iPhone it's been on the older side it's entirely possible that your phone it's not just you is in fact get slower but this also means that if you replace your battery I talked about before actually bring back some of that speed uh so you'll have better battery and a faster phone it's kind of like a win-win all for the price of just a brand new battery but that's on the iPhone side it's hard to say what other companies policies are with this they not as kind of transparent so speed is an issue on your phone there are a few other things to think about first super simple and it's that your phone
