BIG TURBO Volvo 850R Wagon Review! Grandma's 5 Cylinder Fury

gentlemen we are in this incredible Volvo wagon and this isn't just any Volvo wagon this is my buddy Michaels turbo Volvo wagon now this has the inline five-cylinder engine from Volvo right before Ford bought Volvo for a while and then in 2006 Ford stalled Volvo back to Michael decided you know what let's put a bigger turbo on it but the biggest thing about this car is absolutely the cutout it's frickin crazy it comes out straight under the car I'm gonna close the cutout to show you the difference this is the same car so you listen in comparison now it's just all turbo noise but then I go back to hot boy mode this thing sounds like a freaking piper it's very odd full disclosure he told me to get on limit or if you wanted me to hear it it's so interesting to me because the five cylinder makes this noise that's like a hybrid between a viper ball Lambo and something else I can't put my finger on I just can't really figure out what it sounds like it's interesting hearing all these dramatic sounds come out of his mom wagon I knew somebody in my neighborhood growing up they had one of these I never realized that these could have potential at all and to be cool cars the window controls are in the center I can never get used to that now if you are unfamiliar with Volvo's they have done pretty amazing things innovative in the auto industry these five cylinder engines are extremely tough in bulletproof and along with that this motor has been in three different cars this chassis has over 300 thousand miles on it and Volvo chassis czar built to last and not only that they have an incredible safety record Volvo has always been known for their safety in their crumple zones and how they distribute everything during bad situations and they're very safe vehicle so a lot of people like getting Volvo's for our teenagers and their first car because it's a little bit safer right and at the same time Michael took this thing and just made it its own he's had several of these wagons but the last one he had looked just like this and he had it for a while and then it got rear-ended at a red light and he decided you know what I'm gonna buy another shell for $1,200 and then recreate my favorite car I've ever owned in this motor came from that last one so spiritually the last car that got rear-ended is with this one now it is front-wheel drive with a five-speed transmission with the five-speed it's a very soft shifter there's not a lot of feel in the shifter but once you're in gear you're in gear it feels a lot like a BMW shifter but if you're in second gear and you kind of hold it there while it'll pop out another thing too is that there's a gauge on the dash that literally says turbo and it's just a needle to let you know when you're adding boosts to the edge I can't believe that this motor has been in several different shells because it looks flawless he spent days polishing the intake manifold getting it from just bare aluminum to that and the turbo is rare amount it's behind the engine by far one of my favorite weird quirky car engine Bay's for sure the interior is all the time it's a 90s interior but for the time he has a very nice interiors but for the time it's very comfortable it's feels fairly luxurious he's an angel eye headlights or halo headlights as well dad character to it that was mine race can be a little sketchy though that's definitely one thing if you try to slow down the rotors will kind of like not bite as much as you want and you have to let off then go back on the brake I'm gonna do a pull with the cut out close to see how unfeeling it is snow sounds good oh yeah you just get a lot more blow up noise when the cut out is close cut out open ready this boy was very much like a crabber blue on the Mustang and it actually looks really nice and he actually painted the calipers green which at first I didn't know how I felt about it but I like the contrast I like how it is also with the brakes and the gunmetal wheels with the bright color it just works the backseat has plenty of room this car in general has so much open space I mean look at the sunroof look at everything he also did custom fabric on the headliner which is fantastic but it's on BC coilovers even they made BC coils for this thing it's amazing so it's on BC coil it's a good wheel tire set up the front-wheel drive doesn't spin pretty much at all it just goes all so though it's not the best car to shift quickly but it's fun to go off limiter go into it thing and like we said before this engine has so many miles on it it's insane yeah oh yeah that's the stuff it's so weird you're like driving this big car but it's a buttery smooth it doesn't even feel front-wheel drive honest to God and as no torques here whatsoever I don't know events Volvo's engineering just in general of making the front-wheel drive very easy to drive or is just good in general some of my favorite cars I've ever reviewed our cars with stories and like we talked about earlier this car has an amazing story and even if the Volvo isn't your thing you have to appreciate what they've done this is like taking that c30 I reviewed and making it a whole door wagon it's just fun to cruise around town in this mom vehicle unreal all the Tureaud when it comes back on the throttle when it you're coming down on throttle there is a lot of drone when the cut out you probably couldn't even hear people say what they just said however there's one thing I've noticed about this car so far the clutch feel is lighter than the throttle pedal feel the throttle pedal is very heavy something I never really imagined and as I get on it first gear it's like okay yeah it's a heavy paddle feel no big deal but then you go in a second gear and you're like kinda in it see look I'm already on the pedal but it isn't engaged enough because I didn't put enough pressure on it so when it comes to like just things getting used to the car that's probably the most difficult thing about driving the car everything else it's driving a manual wagon driving a manual mom car except it's way cooler and it's a peculiar sound that you pretty much won't ever hear outside of any other five cylinders kinda like the TT RS from Audi you know that's a five cylinder as well and it makes a similar sound going back to say the Focus RS that was in Europe you know that also had a turbo five cylinder and it sounds just like this so I guess it's like a Focus RS Volvo wagon thing dead stop turbo turbo turbo ah that second gear gets me every time the Volvo wagon has this very signature body line you can see this car on file away and if you have seen it before you know that it's a Volvo it has the the break taillights in the back that go all the way up the body and it creates this very peculiar shape it almost starts to have curves up front you know where the grille is it's a little boxy but it starts to have curves but the farther back you go the box here it gets you say hi to Michael that's the owner he wanted to see his car from the outside go he's never seen him from the outside so turbo Volvo wagon what do I think of it I think it's interesting I think it's a really cool story that Michael was able to pull this off basically his third or fourth time he loves these Volvo's he's basically a Volvo expert when we were talking filming the glamour shots he knows everything about them and I just love when people are passionate about weird quirky cars that typically would not be seen as project cars the more weird cars I do the more I
