The Premium Compact Crossover Space: A Battle Between Acura and Genesis

Acura has recently refreshed its RDX, which is now joined by the new Genesis GV70. Both vehicles are excellent options in the premium compact crossover space, and it's difficult to say that one is definitively better than the other. However, by setting them up side by side and examining their features, we can gain a better understanding of which vehicle may be more suitable for our needs.

The Acura RDX: A Familiar Yet Improved Vehicle

Acura has done an excellent job of cleaning up the lines of the 2022 RDX. The new design takes some inspiration from the larger MDX, but it works well on its own. The front inlets, side fascia, tight headlights, and upright grille all contribute to a sharp-looking machine. Adding the limited edition blue paint on the PMC edition takes the RDX to the next level, making it a standout in its class.

On the inside, the RDX boasts a great cabin space that is both well-laid out and forward-thinking for its segment. The central dashboard feature is a massive 14.5-inch infotainment screen that is responsive and works seamlessly with integrated Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The base audio system consists of a nine-speaker setup, and there are also two USB ports available in both the first and second rows.

The RDX also features an impressive array of standard kit, including a large panoramic moonroof, 12-way power-adjusting front seats, heated power side mirrors, and tons of great safety features. The seats are supremely comfortable, and there is ample space for both front and rear passengers.

However, Acura keeps things simple on the power side of the RDX, with only one engine available. This engine is a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that produces 272 horsepower. It pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and can be paired with either front-wheel drive or Acura's excellent Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system.

In contrast to the RDX, the Genesis GV70 offers more choice for its customers. The base engine is a 2.5-liter turbo 4 that makes an impressive 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. However, step up to the 3.5T model, and the vehicle features a twin-turbo three-and-a-half-liter V6 that produces 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque.

The GV70 also comes standard with all-wheel drive, and pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base price of the GV70 starts at $41,000 for the 2.5T standard model. However, there are also more expensive versions available, including the 3.5T standard model that starts at $52,600, and the 3.5T Sport Prestige which commands a hefty $62,500.

The Price Spread: A Key Consideration

One of the key differences between the RDX and the GV70 is their price spreads. The base price of the RDX is around $39,000, while the base price of the GV70 starts at $41,000. However, as we've seen, there are more expensive versions available for both vehicles.

Ultimately, the choice between the Acura RDX and the Genesis GV70 will depend on our individual needs and priorities.
