A Hands-On Review of DJ Hero Renegade Edition: A Music Game that Surpassed Expectations

I spent a solid two to three days playing through the game, and I must say it's not bad. The hardest song on the "hard" mode was 69, which is quite impressive considering it's one of the most challenging songs on the hardest level. This shows that the game does offer a good level of difficulty, even for non-experts.

The unlockables in the game are another feature that I found to be really cool. You can unlock new characters, gear such as headphones, decks, and samples from Beats by Dre. The gear is really neat, with different skins and colors available for customization. For example, my character's deck skin is a cool red sweep.

the box that came in the Box you're looking at right there you can see just how big it is let me put my hand up there so you can compare it I could like fit two Arms of Mine across there and it also did come with the CD right here uh Jay-Z and Eminem CD 12 tracks from each of them so uh that's pretty cool it's the first time they've ever been included I was actually listening to the Jay-Z once that's why it's out and that has a little graphic right in there like a turntable or something so that's cool and then it says DJ Hero Renegade Edition right there so that's the box that came in really nicely packed as well um so that's really cool it did come with everything else which I will show you in a minute like the stand and the case and everything like that so up here we have my our stand um it is standing on the legs the four legs and it is on the full case I actually the first time I had like half of it it's actually supposed to be the full case so I have the full briefcase on there and if you go up under here you can see that that's where the legs screw in and uh things on the side right there and here is the actual turntable itself you have the your buttons right here along with your indicator just to tell you it's on and again this does take batteries uh included battery so that's a good thing um and obviously the batteries aren't going to run out too fast then you have your Euphoria button which is equivalent to the uh the um star power and Guitar Hero if you're familiar with Guitar Hero which I know a lot of you probably are and then here is the what's equivalent to the whammy bar and Guitar Hero that multiplies uh that boosts up your points and here's the turntable Crossfade mixer sorry about that then I put this little sticker right down here it came with some stickers I went ahead and put that on there and I also went ahead and put the Jay-Z presents DJ hair Renegade Edition says Rock Nation and Rockefeller up there and then you have just your basic turntable right there the blue red and green button if you turn it over you can't actually switch out if you're a left-handed person you can switch it from right here um there's somewhere on here right there this is a little latch right there you can just pull it out and uh switch it around so if you're a lefty you can put this part right here over on this side just in case you are a left-handed person so that's a cool feature it adds and also let me just add that when it is on the stand it it may seem at first uh kind of unstory if you use like one hand but when you have both hands on it and you're actually in the middle of a mix and you're doing a good uh song and everything it actually you can't even tell you you think it's like on a hard floor or something or it's like sitting on a flat surface because it really is really sturdy I was really surprised by that and let me add that this turntable is uh really um you can tell that it's really well built and really well made obviously with the gold plates it's a really nice feature added right there and just I mean this is a fingerprint magnet this black gloss right here and also go going all the way around kind of like a disco ball look um but it is really sturdy uh really well built um like it feels like almost full metal even though you know it's like plastic it really feels really nice so that's enough about the turntable um the case obviously a really nice all-around case right here it's full pretty much metal you have a little handle right down there full all-around case really nice briefcase just to put this in in case you're taking it to a party and whatnot which again is really great for parties so let's go ahead and get into the game itself and before I go ahead and show you that let me just add that this game is fantastic it is probably one of my favorite games of all time and definitely probably the best game I've played this year so let's go ahead and get into some of the gameplay and how this works alright I'm in this view once again where you can see both the screen and the controller so you can actually see me navigating and you can see it on the screen as well right here let me get you a better look at the screen you have right there um scratch the surface which this is all part of your career you just go over in your career and then you could create your own custom DJ setlist and guitar list or you can take the tutorial right there the custom guitar and DJ set list is cool because you can just uh you know start a quick game you don't have to it doesn't affect your career or anything like that and you can also play online which I haven't really played online yet because there's not too many people with the game um there's the quick list again and then that's the very last level of your career which I will unlock later so let me just do a quick play real fast you see if down there it says quick start you can do a quick start you have options continue and select if you go to options it's just stuff like this start chart calibration cheats and all that stuff leaderboards friend invites so let me just go ahead and get uh let me get out of that and I'm just gonna do a quick start all right let's uh let's do a custom DJ set list uh uh I already have some things in here so I'm gonna do the uh actually I'm gonna remove that I'm gonna go all the way up here I'm gonna do Master Ace and John uh Gene Knight born to roll Mr Big Stuff so I'm gonna add that just press square and then you can just hit quick start I'm gonna play on hard for you guys um I have I am getting pretty good at hard so let's go ahead and show you some of this hard and um you'll see on the screen um I'll just show you on the screen once it comes up obviously you're gonna have the three three buttons coming down just like you do on Guitar Hero whatever guitar here it's like four or five um so this is only three and it makes it a lot easier but there is a lot of more complicated things as well so if you're pressing button to skip that and then up in the top right you have your score and your multiplier will be in the bottom left along with the rewind button and how many notes you've hit this is a really light song as well it's not too hard see I'm using this button right here all right let's step it up a bit here we go we're gonna do a the hardest song on hard wait where is it the hardest song is well I'm not gonna say it's the hardest song but it is a really hard song um Wale looking at me and hey Mama so let's do this oops now I'm gonna do a quick start and we're gonna do it on hard all right guys here we go stepping it up a notch here let's go let's go loading times aren't too long it's just basic loading pretty much all right here we go skip this and here we go this is tough hey don't judge it I'm just I'm still learning okay I don't know he said well thank you see I'm not pro at this game I just messed it up big that time yeah I'm lost surprised me of how good it was it's actually better than I thought it would be um I knew I was expecting a lot but I mean it just blew me out of proportion I mean it was a really really great game I definitely recommend it for anybody unless you're running low on budget or something like that you can't afford something like this and I would wait for you know Modern Warfare 2 or another one of those good games and the online feature is cool obviously uh and again this thing is not as full featured as rock band um but it is really full featured it has a lot of features um as you saw on the gameplay but again a size Full Features rock band because rock band you know it's it's pretty much like one of the best selling and one of the most hyped about and everything but this is definitely
