Levi's Commuter Jacket with Jacquard by Google - Hands On Review

The Levi's Commuter Trucker Jacket with Jacquard by Google: A Smart and Stylish Upgrade to Traditional Denim

This is not your average denim jacket, as it's actually a smart jacket made by Levi's in collaboration with Google. Specifically, it's called the Levi's Commuter Trucker Jacket with Jacquard by Google, yes really, and it's an exciting improvement in wearable technology. Most of this jacket is actually traditional denim, but just this cuff right here is made with Google's Jacquard fabric, which is made with a conductive fiber and a special grade polyester that allows this part to act as a touch sensor.

We've been wearing this jacket for the past couple of months now, and we've largely used it to control music playback on our phone. With a simple brush out, we can change the track with a double tap - it just tells us what song is playing now, with the brush in, I can pause the song, making it really ideal when I'm commuting on the train and I don't really want to take my phone out, maybe it's a crowded train, maybe I just don't want to take my phone out. I can simply do gestures like this on the cuff to play music, pause music, change the track or for Growlers.

The touch sensor is connected to this Jacquard tag which has a haptic sensor, vibration motor, LED Bluetooth and a battery, so that it lets us sort of connect it all together to control some certain functions on our smartphone. There are other abilities we can assign to those gestures, for example, if I'm biking, I can do a brush swipe to figure out what the next direction is on my commute or when I'm exactly going to arrive at my destination. Some other features use a gesture to find my phone, light up the LED to sort of show it off and there are a couple of other things but overall, you might feel like this is a little limiting to what really this jacket can do, and that's sort of the point - it doesn't want to overload us with a lot of technology. It's more really a fashion statement because it's you know a Levi's denim jacket but with some added helpful tasks that we can maybe find useful when we're walking around commuting or just in general daily life situations.

Overall, we've generally found it to be actually helpful - we're not using it to control and listen to notifications or all sorts of other fancy stuff that maybe smartwatches can do, but we found the need that we don't need to take out our smartphones and disrupt the activity that we're doing just to change a song or just to see the next direction in our commute instead we can just use these gestures and sort of just get on with our life. The main problem is that you have to charge this jacket - now you have to do that by taking this tag out and plugging it into a USB port, and it takes not too long to charge.

The problem is when you go to your closet and realize you know you want to put the jacket on but oh it's dead so now you can't really use the spark capabilities without sort of either waiting for it to charge or you just sort of ignore it and just wear the jacket as a normal jacket. A good thing is at least, just don't look bad even when the Jacquard tag is dead - still, the technology works really well for what it can do and we wouldn't be surprised to see the same technology and other types of clothing products and we're kind of excited to try them out.

You can currently buy this jacket for $350 from Levi's but you can also get a non-Jacquard version of this exact same jacket from Levi's for about $150 or less.
