LG 23MP68VQ Review - The Ultimate Budget Monitor
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey what is up guys and welcome back to another video and welcome back to probably the most requested video I've ever had a review of the LG mp68 VQ or this monitor right here this is a budget monitor it costs around about £ 120 in the UK at the time of filming it features AMD freesync with a range of 40 to 75 HZ a maximum refresh rate of 75 HZ and an IPS panel so you can get all of these things for £1 120 so is this the ultimate budget monitor do you need to ever spend any more or does this fall flat on its face well to get it started let's take a look at the design of the Monitor and overall I think it actually looks really nice and serves a fair amount of function the biggest problem is with the stand itself as while it does a very good job of keeping your monitor from rocking about everything's fairly sturdy you don't really have any adjustments at all all you've got is tilt and this isn't such a problem when it comes to swivel as you can just move the monitor from left to right but the height adjust there just isn't any at all and this means that the monitor was always too low for my liking and once you've become accustomed to having a monitor that has height adjust and you're able to set it up properly this is definitely a step backwards but you will find a Visa Mount around the back which you don't often find on budget monitors I have no idea why which means you can mount it to a third- party stand which is what I did I mounted it to an armstand on my desk using the 75 cm Visa Mount note that is note that that is a smaller Mount than the standard 100x 100 visa and then everything was Dandy I was able to get the monitor to exactly the right height and just have it with all the adjustments I would like so if you do get the monitor and you find that you are having it a little bit too low or you just want more adjustments grab yourself a Visa compatible Mount moving around the back of the monitor you will find that connections wise we have an HDMI DVI and then a VGA note that the free sync actually requires the HDMI there's no display port here so as long as you have a compatible AMD graphics card or Apu you can get free sync over HDMI which is a nice change and this is definitely one of amd's newer Technologies moving back around the front though you'll find that the bezels are very thin although I'm not entirely convinced about the whole gloss effect on the entirety of the monitor as it does pick up fingerprints very very easily and is a tad annoying but the menu systems on the monitor are actually very well laid out and they put some more expensive monitors to shame here you can customize everything with the four-way selector it the monitor does actually come pre-calibrated which is very strange for a budget monitor as well and out the box everything looked really nice but if you do want to enable the free sync you need to do this in the menu and as soon as you enable free Inc you'll unlock the 75 HZ refresh rate even if you have an Nvidia card turn freezing on and then you get that 75 HZ refresh rate one thing though to note is that in the Bios you won't be able to see the BIOS if you have this setting enabled so if you have a few blank screens and you're wondering why then you need to turn the free sync off which is fine right well no because it's really bloody stupid on this monitor if you if you've not got anything connected at all and you've got no signal you can't turn freezing off in the menus it just Cycles between inputs indefinitely and you're never going to find anything so if you have one monitor this Monitor and then you want to access the BIOS because your computer is having a problem then you're going to need to find another way of powering this monitor with something so you can turn off free sync how stupid is that I would definitely like to see that the free setting was able to be turned off without needing to have anything connected to the monitor as that just makes sense but once you have got this monitor set up the way you want it to and you get this plugged into your PC I genuinely think you're going to be very very impressed with the way it performs because it's got an IPS panel and it's not a rubbish IPS panel genuinely this is a really rewarding experience when using this for color critical applications for General web browsing for video playback yes there are definitely monitors out there that are better for color critical applications but compare this to a TN panel and compare this to a similarly priced TN gaming panel and the difference is night and day genuinely it's absolutely ridiculous the level of image quality from a TN monitor at this price and an IPS monitor at this price is ridiculous and to put this into to perspective I've got the Aon monitor in at the moment it's a TN panel 1440p and this is night and day versus that monitor and that's a very good TN panel but this is just so much better I think its main competition is really going to be in the AOC freesync monitor 144 Herz red bezel forgotten the name of it now starts with a P um yep that's going to be priced very similarly to this Monitor and so it all comes down to gaming performance right because if you're buying this for gaming which one should you go for well it's actually again a very obvious choice because unless you're going to be playing Esports titles 24/7 this thing is just so much better than pretty much every other budget monitor I've used a lot of this is down to that 75 HZ refresh rate even if you're using an Nvidia card the difference between 60 and 75 HZ is massive even in kind of unoptimized games like Call of Duty infinite Warfare where I was getting some stutter I still had a very very pleasurable experience and was having some very successful games yes it's not as smooth or responsive as a 144 htz like that AOC freeing monitor but pretty much I would take the LG because it's so much more flexible in everything it can do and as soon as we start playing some games that aren't quite so reliant on having the absolute fastest refresh rate then again this blows it out the water and just cause genuinely looks so much better on this monitor than on any other TN monitor I've ever used and pretty much every other budget monitor like it but of course there is one more thing to discuss before we wrap up this video and that is of course the free sync technology within this panel and it doesn't make such a big difference as on higher end monitors because 1080p is a lot easier to drive and I think a lot more people have graphics cards that can power this monitor at the upper end of its frame rates and I was using this with a 1050ti and I was pretty much blitzing 75 HZ in every single title I was using anyway but assuming you got an older card or one that has well one that outputs between 40 and 75 Herz then you're definitely going to see reduced stutter and tearing in your games and it's definitely a good monitor to pair with an AMD GPU as you're going to get the full benefit of doing so and freesync is pretty much just as good as gsync these days I think g-sync is slightly better but definitely I've said this so many times before I don't think it's worth paying the premium for g-sync so if you're buying a new system from scratch I would look at getting AMD freesync monitor with an AM AMD GPU and this is definitely a solid choice for you which is why it wins the editor's choice award and to be honest with you it's definitely shortlisted for monitor of the Year I'll be doing some awards later on before the year is up and I'd be very surprised if this wasn't right at the top or at least very very close we've had a very good year for monitors but to be able to get a experience that is so smooth and color that is so so nice look and even contrast that is so good on a monitor that cost £120 genuinely why spend more unless you really do want a larger monitor with a larger or I should say a higher resolution this is pretty much all you need so there we go I hope it's been useful hit the like button if it has hit the dislike button if it hasn't let me know any questions you have down in the comment section below I'll leave the Amazon link to this product as always down in the description and don't for forget to subscribe for more videos just like this if you're more interested in a monitor that does gaming and doesn't do anything else quite as well and you really do want the best budget gaming monitor then maybe it's worth checking out my review of the AOC budget freesync monitor that features a TN panel uh in the eye in the top right hand corner as yes for gaming that may well be better in Esports titles but to be honest every single time I would take the LG and there we go thanks for watching watching I'll see you in the next videohey what is up guys and welcome back to another video and welcome back to
